That’s actually pretty neat, bit heavy as an art piece though.

I see many like that around the Philadelphia region. Some of them say Keystone Bell, while s
ome newer ones say Bell Atlantic.

Please! It’s 2019 folks, I think it’s time to call them gender-neutral holes.
Actually surprised no one has complained about this on twitter yet.

Logo was designed in 1969, so at most it’s 50 years old.

This one has seen better days as well. New York in last September

EssExTee beat me to it. Yes, places already have a beef with this.
I’m all for gender neutrality, but I see “Man” (gender) and “Mankind” as two different things. Related, yes. But I’m so sick at my job of having to say things like “Person hours” instead of “Man hours.” We are a very large, very progressive workplace that takes that stuff seriously.
“Our team is a little short on manpower at the moment” is a no-no.

That's old

I wouldn’t be surprised if whoever the manufacture of manhole covers is, is still using decades old casting molds

Yay I did something right

gender neutral holes, the way I like ‘em

Makes 'em easier to fill?

Do you know why personhole covers are round and not square?
![]() 07/26/2019 at 10:40 |
|
Because a circle can’t fit t hrough itself
![]() 07/26/2019 at 10:41 |
|
Exactly. It’s so you don’t drop the cover down the hole.

I suppose it could also be as recent as 1984, when the Bell System was broken up. Or later, if any of the new local phone companies had old stock to use up before ordering new covers.

That's still a decade older than I am.

I always thought the Baton Rouge manhole covers were neat.
People are stealing the water meter covers in New Orleans and selling them on EBay. They aren’t manufactured any longer, so any of them for sale are likely to have been stolen.

I have talked to contractors and laborers that are continually amazed by this.

If it’s sewer we still call them manholes. Other buried treasure I like to call them “access ways”. I don’t see this changing any day soon, thanks Berke ley .

Damn

Actually, they don’t use solid molds at all:

When I was in high school I knew a very skinny girl named Emily. My friends and I were skateboarding one day, learning to Ollie over manhole covers. Then we noticed the little water main covers. And I said “that’s not a man whole cover, it’s too small for a man” my buddy said “Emily could fit in there” and we both said “it’s an Emily hole cover, ha that sounds dirty” and to this day I call them “ Emily hole covers”
